Southern California Edison notified the California Public Utilities Commission that faulty equipment may have caused the Silverado Fire. SCE asserts a lashing wire may have made contact with an overhead primary conductor, likely sparking the wildfire. The fire almost killed to Orange County Fire Authority firefighters trying to put out a spot fire that exploded to a 10,000-sq-ft. blaze in a matter of seconds.
In recent years, there have been many incidents of negligence (mostly from faulty power lines or equipment), resulting in a spark lighting up entire forests and affecting habitat in it. However, it is not only the natural ecosystem that gets involved. Our wildfire lawyer and many insurance companies and investigators will be involved.
Many people in homes along the forest lines have to get evacuated without knowing if they’ll ever come back after becoming fire victims. It might be late for some residents during the evacuation, too, resulting in instant wrongful death wildfire lawsuit.

The 2020 Silverado Fire Litigation
In October 2020, Southern Orange County saw the Silverado Canyon fire fueled by the Santa Ana winds spreading the fire quicker, burning property, and causing many burn injuries. The fire followed the path of the 2007 Santiago fire and got contained by November 7th, 2020.
The cause of the fire is still under dispute. Still, most parties believe it was the lashing wire in the telecommunications line, pointing the blame at the responsible utility company.
Burning over 13,000 acres of land, the Silverado fire is one of the largest fires in the history of California. The nearby parks that just got a go-ahead for project renovation got parts of it burned down.
One structure got destroyed, while six structures faced heavy property damage. Trees, vegetation, and the seed farm also got burned down, spurring fire litigation throughout Northern California, Central California, and Southern California, USA.

Southern California Edison Lawsuit – $2.2 billion in Recoveries
In 2021, the most anticipated verdict finally came against Southern California Edison, a power company responsible for the Woolsey Fire. Plaintiffs from the Thomas and Koenigstein Fires and the 2018 Montecito mudslides went to a settlement of $2.2 billion with the primary power company.
This came after SoCal Edison paid $360 million in compensation to local government bodies affected by the fire. Even after paying hefty fines, Edison did not admit any wrongdoing or negligence on their behalf.
Let’s recap and understand what led to the Woolsey Fire. In 2018, a fire started west of Chatsworth on the hills prompting an immediate evacuation of around 300,000 residents. The fire ripped through many areas traveling over 97,000 acres and destroying more than 1,600 structures. It even killed three people and reached the gated community near West Hills.
An investigation report stated that the cause of the fire was a spark caused by one of the pieces of equipment owned by the Southern California Edison company.
Is Southern California Edison Company the First to Pay Settlements?
Utility companies have often been at the forefront of wildfires in the country. Reports always state some kind of equipment failure, power line damages, or negligence that causes a spark in the dry forests across California.
Southern California Edison is not the first company to pay such hefty settlements. In 2019, California state’s largest power company PG&E had to pay billions of dollars in liability, forcing the major power company in the state to file for bankruptcy.
Many companies have been involved in wildfires, and all of them have faced severe lawsuits. You can also get compensation; our attorneys can help review your insurance policies and file claims.
