On September 12, 2022, news broke that the man riding a bicycle seriously injured in Newport beach did not survive. The bicyclist’s condition was severe, and he died that afternoon.
Raw footage surfaced of a coroner moving the victim’s body from the police tent, suggesting they did not take him to the hospital.
The video showed the black bicycle the victim was riding on. It had a shattered rear wheel as it lay in the bicycle lane, suggesting that the suspect’s vehicle rear-ended the bicyclist and ran over him before escaping.
Police started their investigations by locating the suspect’s vehicle, a white sedan with a cracked windshield.
They found the suspected driver, 36-year-old Anaheim resident Adriana Rivera Berna, parked at the 2100 block of Eastbluff Drive near Corona del Mar High School, where the officers detained and arrested her.
Police reports revealed that Berna was high on illegal substances before the accident. The crash wasn’t the first time Berna faced DUI charges, and records suggest a history of drug abuse, several DUIs, automobile theft, identity theft, and other crimes.
The “bicyclist seriously injured in Newport Beach hit-and-run” news added another fatality to the numbers. The hit-and-run accident was the 64th bicycle death in Southern California in 2022 and the 15th in Orange County.
