What Does the White House Corona Case Mean?

Was The President Exposed?Donald Trump and Pence Image

Yes! The recent news that a staffer in the White House has coronavirus sent shock waves through the news media Thursday evening. Hope Hicks, a close confidant to President Trump, tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. She traveled with Trump to a variety of events, including the debate earlier this week. All of this could have severe implications on the race and for the health of the president himself.

POTUS tests positive!

"Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!"

It was not yet clear earlier that whether or not the president or the First Lady had contracted the virus. However, both were tested just to be safe. Considering the close proximity of Miss Hicks to the president, it's not a surprise our commander in chief contracted COVID-19. It also underlined the stresses of the virus and the need to keep public officials, especially those in the White House, safe.

What Is Going On Now?

Tonight, the President tweeted some disturbing news. This came after the late-breaking report that Hope Hicks, a close aide to the President, had the virus. In addition, Miss Hicks showed symptoms of the Coronavirus. The President and the First Lady underwent a COVID test to see if they were infected. Now, less than an hour ago, we have our answer.

Above the October 2, 2020 Tweet says: "Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for COVID 19. Terrible! The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!"

The news is shocking, and will likely affect the country in many ways. First is the health of the president and the first lady, of which we pray for. Coronavirus affects those over 65 far more than those under, and the president is well past 70 years old now. However, we don't know the severity of the virus so far on the president's health or what will be the next step. Furthermore, the president has access to the finest doctors and medical research in the world.

Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, also contracted the disease earlier this year and, after a terrible struggle, made it alive and safe. Hopefully, this is what we are looking at in the case of the president. However, many of the wider implications are still not known, especially considering that he is the most powerful person in the world. This also means that he is likely unable to leave the White House except for medical treatment over the next two weeks. Some older patients suffer from Coronavirus for even longer than the two-week period.

The President's Health.

In the recent past, the president received stellar health reviews from his doctors. Whether or not that is still the case prior to the positive test for the coronavirus is still unclear. Obviously, his weight and age may be major factors in how the president is able to fight off the virus. In addition, even if he is able to shake off the virus relatively quickly, there is, of course, concern about the First Lady.

Furthermore, due to his age, it is likely that the president will not be able to leave the White House except for medical procedures until after the election. This might have major effects on the course of the country, as we will discuss later in the article. In addition, President Trump is among the oldest presidents in American history. All of this and more may affect what happens over the next several weeks as we look on to see the effects of the coronavirus on the leader of the free world.

What Happens With The Election?

After the president's health, this is, of course, the number one question. With just about one month ago, this is likely going to have a major effect on the election. In fact, I cannot think of another case just like this that affected a presidential race so close to the actual election day. At the date of the election, the American public may not know whether or not the president is in good physical shape. This is likely going to affect many people's votes.

Furthermore, this is going to shake confidence in the American system. If the president of the United States can get the virus, then anyone can. This is especially scary considering that the president was in a debate with former Vice President Joe Biden several days ago. Hopefully, everyone involved will have a safe and speedy recovery.

However, for many voters, they will be considering whether or not the president is going to be able to lead during this period. The election, cannot be postponed. The election cannot be pushed back. And so for many Americans, there is a strong possibility that they may sit out the election not knowing whether or not the president is able to fulfill his responsibilities during this difficult time.

It is also highly likely that vice president Mike Pence takes over some responsibilities, in the manner of acting president. This is not a common occurrence. The last time it was used was for a medical procedure for President George W Bush in which he temporarily handed over some control to then-Vice President Dick Cheney.

What Does This Mean For The First Family?

President Trump announced that both he and First Lady Melania Trump will quarantine, according to CNN. The President spoke with Sean Hannity earlier today about Hicks' positive result:

"She did test positive, I just heard about this. She tested positive. She's a hard worker. A lot of masks, she wears masks a lot but she tested positive. Then I just went out with a test. I'll see -- you know because we spent a lot of time -- and the first lady just went out with a test also. So whether we quarantine or whether we have it, I don't know," Trump said during a call-in appearance on Fox News' "Hannity."

Fortunately, President Trump and his family have access to the finest medical care in the world. Even if the president did contract the virus, he could receive the best medical care. In addition, there is a chance that President Trump's exposure to the virus may also affect former Vice President Joe Biden.

As a major part of the debate the other day, the two candidates did not shake hands. In hindsight, this was likely a good idea and suggestion. Hopefully, the exposure from Miss Hicks affected no one else around her or the White House. The effects of this news are likely to be far-reaching, in more ways than one.

This includes the safety of the president and his family, likely resulting in a review of all safety procedures in and around the White House. It is also likely to have a major effect on the presidential race, especially with so little time remaining. this news is some of the largest the race produced, and hopefully, we'll be one that results in everyone involved being healthy.

What About The Race For The White House?

Furthermore, it is not immediately clear what the president meant by the quarantine process. Many people are exposed to the virus quarantine for 14 days. It is very possible that Health experts around the president will recommend the same thing. However, with just about one month left in the election, quarantining for 14 days would cut the president's election schedule in half.

This could have severe impacts on the race itself. Furthermore, with several States being very close in the polls, the president's absence will likely also play in effect. In 2016, President Trump won the election in large part due to his tireless campaigning and States like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

However, if he is holed up for two weeks, what happens to his ability to directly affect those states? This is not immediately clear. Also not clear is whether or not this will affect the Biden campaign schedule. The former vice president spent many days of the last month without events, claiming that he was doing debate prep.

Since President Trump is behind in the polls, he needs all the time that he can get on the campaign trail. Will that mean that the president instead decides to go out and campaign even before the two-week period is over? Does that mean any changes and how his campaign approaches the different states on the electoral map?

Since the news is breaking, it is not yet clear how the campaign will react. However, with everything so close, it is much more likely that the campaign will react forcefully to try and take the initiative, especially if the president is taken off of the campaign trail.
