Drunk Driving on New Year’s: The Statistics
One of the Deadliest Days on the Road of the Year
Unfortunately, for drivers the day of celebration is also one of the most dangerous of the year. WFMD reported that between the Christmas and New Year’s holidays in 2018, 285 people were killed on America’s roads due to drunk driving.
According to KTUL, Mississippi is the state with the most fatal accidents on New Year’s Day. In their list, these states ranked in the top five:
3. South Carolina
Furthermore, the National Safety Council estimated that 150 people may die on the nation’s highways due to drunk driving this New Year’s season. As if that wasn’t serious enough, the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reported that of all fatal accidents between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, a full 40% are due to drinking and driving.
Each one is unacceptable. Each one is a life lost. In fact, the safest thing to do is to stay home on New Year’s, whether you had a drink or not. If you have been drinking, there is no reason to get behind the wheel. If you haven’t, then the risk is that someone else on the road has been. Either way, it is a bad bet to head out once the ball drops. The safest thing would be not to play Russian Roulette at all.
