California State Route 1, also part of the Pacific Coast Highway, spans 656 miles from San Dana Point, Orange County, to Leggett, Mendocino County, and features some of the most stunning scenery in California. Besides the scenic beauty, the SR-1 plays an important role in connecting some of California’s most major and popular tourist destinations, promoting economic activity. Through the SR-1, travelers can head to Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Malibu, Santa Barbara, Solvang, Santa Ynez Valley, Los Olivos, Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo, San Simeon, Big Sur, Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, and other nearby cities.

Collision with a Garbage Truck

On October 21, 2021, just before the Tom Lantos Tunnels, an SUV crashed into a garbage truck, causing severe property damage to the SUV and serious injuries to the driver inside. The California Highway Patrol quickly responded to the emergency calls and reached out just in time to close the roads for 2 hours before reopening. Flying Car off the Cliff near San Francisco

On September 16, 2021, the California Highway Patrol received an emergency call for an accident on the SR-1 near San Mateo County. As the first responders reached the accident site, they saw a vehicle at the bottom of the cliff next to the SR-1.

Witnesses stated that the driver simply drove off the side of the road and then down the cliff before ending up on the beach in San Mateo County. It remains unclear as to what caused the driver to drive off the cliff, but the injuries sustained from the accident were too much. The driver was dead, and the local authorities disbursed to pull the car up and block the roads.

Case of an Unfortunate Motorcyclist

A crash occurred on the SR-1 just a mile off Fort Ross Road on September 27, 2021. The California Highway Patrol reached the accident scene to find a dead man with a wrecked motorcycle in the middle of the road. The initial investigation revealed that the motorcyclist swerved off the road and hit a guard rail. The impact from the collision sent the motorcyclist flying off the bike onto the road.
