Welcome to our educational page, written with help from the Millennium Biltmore Hotel accident lawyer at the Ehline Law Firm in DTLA. I am Michael Ehline, and my law office is directly across the street from the Millennium Biltmore Hotel located at 506 S Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90071. I am not only a hotel accident lawyer, but my background as a licensed contractor and transportation company owner gives me special knowledge and experience over a novice or even expert defense counsel with less or zero trade experience.
I have even included pictures of this beautiful, historic hotel (now over 100 years old!). At this historic, haunted hotel, we represented out-of-state and international visitors who suffered injuries. Our top-rated personal injury lawyers in Los Angeles have vigorously assisted consumers with slip-and-fall accidents, elevator or escalator malfunctions, food poisoning incidents, swimming pool accidents, and other similar occurrences, including broken bones, wrongful death claims, and a variety of other personal injuries.

Short History of Millennium Biltmore Hotel
The Millennium was conceived by New York-based architects Leonard Schultze and S. Fullerton Weaver in 1925. In 1926, land developer George E. Merrick and hotel tycoon John McEntee Bowman constructed it as part of the Biltmore Hotels chain. The Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles was one of the notable establishments in that chain and has since become an iconic landmark known for its architectural beauty and historical significance.
Suppose you have heard of this hotelier in downtown Los Angeles. In that case, you know it has a rich history of amazing architecture, food, one-of-a-kind furniture pieces, and intrigue, spanning nearly a century. Once you gain admission, you first see past, present, and future near courts, homeless camps, electric charging stations, and failed local government. This is not a bed and breakfast and is more akin to something you’d expect in a Batman or John Wick movie, to be honest.
Here are some notable highlights:
- Construction and Opening (1923): Designed by the architectural firm Schultze & Weaver, known for their work on iconic hotels, these hospitality amenities were finished in 1923 and developed by the prominent real estate magnate John McEntee Bowman.
- Glamorous Era: During the 1920s and 1930s, this resort became a symbol of elegance and luxury, attracting Hollywood celebrities, socialites, and prominent figures worldwide. It hosted extravagant parties, grand events, and high-profile gatherings.
- Military Hospital (1942-1946): During World War II, it was converted into a military hospital called the Biltmore Military Academy, or university of sorts. It provided medical care to servicemen returning from the war. We could not find any photographs. So if you have any, please send them over.
- Post-War Renovations: After the war, the resort underwent significant renovations to restore its grandeur and accommodate the changing needs of guests.
- Film and Television: It has served as a popular filming location for numerous movies and TV shows. Its grand architecture and historic charm have made it a desirable backdrop for various productions.
- Preservation and Restoration: Recognizing its architectural and historical significance, it was designated as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1969 and almost totally restored to its former glory. Over the years, efforts have been made to preserve and restore its original features while adapting to modern amenities—installation of new lighting and telephone systems. The hotel also carried out restorations to its swimming pool and updated its furniture. Additionally, the hotel implemented an extensive guestroom redecoration program, enhancing the appearance and comfort of the accommodations. A spa facility was also completed, offering guests a place to relax and rejuvenate. These enhancements aimed to improve hotel guests’ experience and maintain Biltmore’s reputation as a luxurious and well-appointed establishment. However, there is old equipment there, and it can still fail. It appears to be a hodgepodge of old and new in some areas and not so great everywhere.
Today, the historic inn continues to operate as a luxury hotel, offering elegant accommodations, event spaces, and dining options. Its rich history and timeless charm make it a landmark in downtown Los Angeles, attracting guests from around the world.
Past Famous Accidents and Deaths
The Millennium, with its rich history and iconic status, has unfortunately been the site of notable accidents and incidents in the past. While each case is unique, it is crucial to understand the legal aspects surrounding such events and the potential liability involved under personal injury law.
Not to be confused with Coral Gables, Florida hotels, the general historical incidents related to the Millennium in Los Angeles are included below for your edification.
Please note that these examples may not be recent and should be verified through reliable sources:
Virginia Rappe Death (1921)
The Virginia Rappe case and the subsequent trials involving Roscoe Arbuckle profoundly impacted Hollywood and the film industry. This blunt-force trauma death was an example of a highly publicized and controversial event that led to increased scrutiny and regulation of the film industry. The incident highlighted issues of morality, scandal, and the power of the media during that era.
Death of Thomas Ince (1924)
The death of Thomas Ince in 1924 is associated with a party that took place at the Biltmore Hotel. Thomas Ince was a film producer, and it was reported that he fell ill during the party and later died. There have been various rumors and speculations surrounding his death, including the theory that claimed he was shot by William Randolph Hearst, a prominent media tycoon, who allegedly mistook him for Charlie Chaplin.
Black Dhalia Death (1947)
The murder of Elizabeth Short, famously known as the Black Dahlia, is indeed connected to the Biltmore Hotel. Elizabeth Short’s body was found in a vacant lot in Los Angeles in January 1947. While it is believed that she was last seen at the Biltmore Hotel, the exact details surrounding her movements and the circumstances of her murder remain a mystery.
Fire Incident (1961)
In 1961, the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, known as the Biltmore Hotel at the time, experienced a fire in the early morning hours. The fire started on the lower floors and quickly spread, causing extensive damage to the historic hotel. However, no fatalities were reported.
Death of Laura Finley (2010)
The death of Laura Finley in 2010 arguably remains among the most mysterious incident on record. Laura Finley, a 48-year-old resident of Alta Loma, walked, slipped, and fell from a height of six stories down a stairwell at the hotel on October 27, just a week before Halloween. The circumstances surrounding her fall and the events leading up to it are unclear, leaving unanswered questions and adding to the mystery surrounding how she passed away.
Cutting Down the Legends and Myths?
Drowned Woman
The lodge has a ghostly tale associated with the presence of the “Drowned Woman.” According to legend, this ghost is believed to be a young woman who met a tragic fate by drowning in the hotel’s swimming pool during the 1930s. It is said that her spirit lingers here, and sightings have been reported of a wet figure walking near the pool area. Witnesses claim that she leaves behind a trail of water as she moves, adding to the eerie atmosphere surrounding her apparitions. Despite being a lodger there multiple times, I still haven’t used the clear pool and have never questioned the tale.
Filming Location Accidents (Various Years)
The Millennium has served as a popular filming location in Los Angeles for movies and television shows during the Golden Age of Hollywood, California, and recent years. While not directly related to accidents, these productions may have incidents or accidents associated with them during filming.
It’s important to note that these examples are not comprehensive, and other incidents or accidents may have occurred at the Millennium, California. To get a complete list and accurate understanding of any specific incidents, it’s best to refer to reliable sources or contact the hotel directly for the most up-to-date information.
Types of Legal Liability?
Legal liability may come into play when accidents occur at a hotel like the Millennium Biltmore. Depending on the circumstances, different parties may be held accountable for the injuries or fatalities suffered by guests. This can include the hotel, management, employees, contractors, or even third-party entities involved in providing services or maintaining the premises.
What About Assaults by Rioters and the Homeless?
Millennium Biltmore and its managing innkeepers could face potential liability under a negligent security theory. After all, the unprecedented sexual assault, drugs, and public health issues presented by dangerous criminals are without question.
Women are regularly harassed for protection money to keep their cars from being tampered with, or just terrorized. Riots can occur at the drop of a hat as well. And with catch-and-release district attorneys, criminals are emboldened to cause more crimes, no matter how many times they get reported.
And we know that Los Angeles is far more dangerous than other cities. Generally, a hotel’s liability for attacks on tenants by rioters and the homeless can vary depending on the specific circumstances and applicable laws. Having spoken with the concierge, doorman, and others at the Millenium, it is without question that, especially at night, employees and lodgers face assaults that would not have occurred just a few short years ago.
Duty to Keep Travelers Safe?
Generally, hotels have a duty to ensure their guests’ safety and security while on the premises, even a parking lot accident. Suppose a hotel fails to take reasonable measures to prevent foreseeable harm or adequately address security concerns. In that case, they may be held civilly liable for injuries sustained by guests during such attacks. Our Los Angeles hotel accident lawyer can give you a free consultation about your rights entitled to compensation.

Duty to Provide Adequate Security
Conveniently located hotels in danger zones for crime are expected to implement security measures appropriate for their location and potential risks. This can include measures such as hiring security personnel, installing surveillance cameras, implementing access controls, and maintaining well-lit and secure common areas. Suppose a hotel is aware of a pattern of criminal activities in the area or has reason to believe that its guests may be at risk. In that case, they are responsible for taking reasonable precautions to protect their guests.
Recovering Compensation for Negligent Security at Millenium?
Factors such as prior incidents, knowledge of dangerous conditions, adequacy of security measures, and the hotel’s response to known risks will be evaluated to determine civil liability. It is essential to consult with a qualified attorney who specializes in premises liability or personal injury cases to assess the specific circumstances of an incident and determine the hotel’s potential liability.
