On the 14th of December 2022, a passenger sustained fatal injuries after falling overboard on a cruise ship. The Coast Guard made every effort to rescue her, but it was too late.
The US Coast Guard tweeted early on Thursday morning about a woman drowning after falling off a carnival cruise ship. The 36-year-old female was on board the MSC Cruise Ship Meraviglia until she fell overboard into the water about 18 miles off the coast of Port Canaveral.
That morning, the cruise liner was supposed to arrive at Port Canaveral off Florida Coast when the unthinkable happened and the cruise ship’s advanced detection systems alerted them to the mishap.
The cause of the incident is still unclear and is still under investigation.
Unfortunately, despite the rapid rescue operation after she fell overboard, the woman was reported to have sustained life-threatening injuries.
At approximately 7:30 a.m., the US Coast Guard sent out a team of emergency responders by boat and aircraft to find the woman’s body. Shortly after the commencement of the rescue attempt, the Coast Guard recovered her body..
The MSC released the following statement in response to the incident:
“Early this morning, MSC Meraviglia’s advanced detection systems alerted our crew to a passenger overboard while the ship was sailing to Port Canaveral. The crew performed an immediate search and rescue operation alongside the US Coast Guard, who supported search efforts with boats and a helicopter.
Unfortunately, despite the rapid rescue operation, the passenger sustained fatal injuries. We are offering our full support to authorities as they investigate this matter. We are deeply saddened by this incident and offer our sincerest condolences to the family and those affected.”
In November, the Coast Guard saved a man who fell overboard on the Carnival Valor cruise ship. When authorities found him about 20 miles south of Southwest Pass in Louisiana, the man had been struggling to stay afloat for over 15 hours and was on the brink of death.
