Defensive driving must be at a whole different level for bikers. And for a good reason. As discussed, most accidents between autos and riders involve passenger vehicles. Statistics say that 3 out of 4 mishaps harming bikers on the roads are from other vehicles they share the roads with. The greatest amount of cited accidents happens at intersections.
Most Crashes are Low Speed.
Of these, most occur at 30 miles per hour, or slower and were still unavoidable. Some sources indicate that many riders are leery of using their front brakes, for fear of flipping the bike. But consistently counting on the rear brake, drastically increases the risk of fishtailing.
Intoxicated drivers snuff the life out of riders all the time. These irresponsible evil doers account for large percentage of deaths and capable of causing many grim injuries. It could be drugs or alcohol. Either way, riders must be especially vigilant.
A major problem fallen riders face, is road rash and friction burns, as well as cuts and other abrasions to the knees, hands, and elbows. Thick armored riding jackets, leather pants, chaps, strengthened gloves, steel toe boots, and other clothing save lives. As a matter of fact, along with a D.O.T. approved helmet, gear drastically increases your chances of living.
Approximately 1/4 of motorcycle accidents are single-vehicle (only the bike itself). Of those, 2/3 of single vehicle wrecks are attributable to the negligence of the rider. The biggest cause of these solo crashes remains sliding out. Typically the cause comes from improper use of the vehicle brakes. Or riders take corners at an unsafe speed for the weather and other road conditions.
What is the Significance of Rider Experience?
The experienced rider is not strictly speaking, at less risk. Most riders have been traversing the highways for around three years or so. Also, over half of motorcycle collisions take place with novice riders who have around five months riding experience. But an experienced rider on a new bike is at much greater risk than if he or she were enjoying their old bike.
External Causes of Injuries.
Nonrider created scenarios that cause harm, are typically from a poor motorcycle braking system, defective, low or flat tires, animal strikes, such as a bird hitting a rider in the face, or inclement weather and oil slicks. There are also the few reported cases of road rage and jealousy that hurts riders.
Motorcycle rider safety training statistically increases the risk of survival for a rider. Knowing how to fall, or surf the bike to a stop can significantly increase the chances of making it out alive when there is a wreck.
